The Historical City of Canterbury
Written by HELEN

Canterbury is an inviting Cathedral City which is home to over 42 thousand people.
The winding cobbled streets are filled history with houses from many centuries, with the city itself surrounded by a roman stoned wall.

Canterbury’s unmistakable landmark, the Cathedral located in the centre of the city boosts the longest nave in Europe, ample intricate stained glass windows and world heritage site status, it have been a famous pilgrimage site since the bloody murder of Thomas a Becket in 1170.

From the cathedral almost every direction you take will allow you to delve into the past from, St Augustine’s abbey, built by king Ethelbert after his conversion to Canterbury, the historic site is one frequently used as an open air theatre, offering the perfect setting for plays such as Shakespeare’s ‘a mid summer nights dream‘.
Just along the road we have St Martins Church, the oldest Saxon church in England and still used today. To the west the majestic Westgate towers are well worth a visit allowing you perfect view over the ruins of Canterbury castle, originally built by William the Conqueror.

Today the city is a hive of colourful markets and ample high street and independent shops, public houses and eateries.
